The not-very-sympathetic prison guard K.E.I.K.O. is an homage to the much more helpful (though still in essence a prison guard) L.U.C.A.S. from Godzilla Island (1997).

The sinister Li'l Boy, who haunts Whoofy, son of the legendary Ape-Whale, is based mostly on Ichiro, the protagonist of All Monsters Attack (1969), who dreams his way to Monster Island and befriends Godzilla's son Minilla.
