Preparatory drawings are so enlightening.

Raphael did figure studies looking closely at the form of the figure & how it moved naturally in that pose. Then he would would add drapery to the figure before deciding on composition & colour.

He was very methodical. He had a system.

A beautifully engraved intaglio in the collection. This one shows Antinous, the companion& lover of Hadrian, in profile. Part of the bust, fibula, and drapery have been restored in gold as part of a more modern mount. It dates to AD131-138

The Statue of Zeus was made of chryselephantine (gold and ivory). The drapery was made of gold, the flesh of ivory.
