In 1530, Otto Brunfels (1488-1534, Germanic botanist) compiled 'Herbarium Vivae Eicones': plants he himself found during his botanical studies were represented with woodcuts. Also he wrote on pedagogics, the Arabic language, pharmaceutics & entomology.

On this day in 1876, Sherwood Anderson was born. He wrote the essay “J. J. Lankes and His Woodcuts” for our Winter 1931 issue, describing the title artist in a minimalist manner similar to his style in WINESBURG, OHIO.

And now, something different. Giorgio Liberale (1527-1579) was an Italian artist who had been working for the imperial court in Prague. He designed over 500 small woodcuts for the first Latin edition of classic Dioscurides' Materia medica.

One of the many hidden treats inside Book of Hours, made in Paris in c.1526, is the vibrancy of the hand coloured woodcuts. The vividness of the orange of the hose and breeches in this image in particular absolutely blows my mind.

Woodcuts in the Czech prayer book XVII J 4 from 1510. Its owner pasted woodcuts (sitting saints and colored woodcut of Mary with Jesus in the gloriole). The second woodcut is of Czech origin, around 1490. Other fragments were pasted directly into the manuscript.

Munch was a prolific painter (some 1000 paintings & 1000s of woodcuts, lithographs etc). His painting was well established in the early 1880s, such as we see in this early self-portrait (on left). But there are others of that decade that share looser style of The Day After.
