I believe that was an idea posited by Gene Roddenberry and locked into cannon with Mike Okuda adding it to the writers tech manual.

The probable reason for Gene suggesting it was that in the early scripts for the Enterprise is named for the aircraft carrier Yorktown.

Brittany was the first person I shared my scripts with. My original plans were to make the comic as a web-series in short chapters. Brittany pushed me to work harder and turn them into full comic scripts, which really helped me grow and move past writer’s block.
