One thing I have decided about in my story setting is they are VERY fond of jewelry. There are not many fabrics that can resist degradation in sea water, so jewelry is the best alternative to clothes. Jewelry custom made for their bodies is highly prized.

I think part of the reason I want my Merfolk to have long tails is that I simply prefer the aesthetics of a long tail. Yes, I have other reasons, such as them using their tails like whips to fight off attackers, but the graceful curve of a longer tail also really appeals to me.🔽

So, it's a work in progress, but I'm putting together some simple diagrams of Merfolk anatomy as I put together my ideas for The Mermaid's Quest. In terms of proportions, if a Human averages at 8 heads in length, a Merfolk will be 18 heads (if you include the caudal fin.)🔽
