I learned something new today. General Mordecai Gist of Maryland is represented in John Trumbull’s painting “Surrender of Lord Cornwallis” (back row, right side) on the key to the painting. I knew Gist was at the siege & fought in the South, but I was unaware of this.

1776 the Battle of Assunpink Creek was fought between GW & Cornwallis. In the smoke & confusion, Cornwallis called for his troops to fall back 3 times. When night fell, he declared, “I shall wait to bag the fox in the morning.” In the morning “the fox” & his army were gone.
