4. Add colors on a separate layer. i start placing my shadows and highlights down at this point, as a whole, i work zoomed out. so i can see how the colors look as a piece, i only zoom in when refining or working on details. at this point, i lower the opacity of the sketch layer.
@Gulipsita yeah! for the background, ill use a variety of patterns, usually lines or dots or whatever would work best, and for the whole image, ill overlay a screentone at low opacity and sometimes use a sort of blurring brush to help with depth (images show before/after processing)

Forgot to post these up. Week 2 for Craig Mullins course on #schoolism . First part was to draw the portrait in a looseer style and experiment with adding texture. Next was to use really low opacity and glaze the colours in. Great learning experience #illustration #startrek

Drawing complex objects in 3D:
1 Draw the object flat
2 Use transform tool to angle it into desired perspective
3 Duplicate. Extrude/bring forward one layer at 50% opacity. Leave the back layer at 25% opacity.
4 Connect layers using lines that converge at a point.
5 Erase excess.
