Battle of Anghiari, Peter Paul Rubens (1603)
Copy of a lost painting by da Vinci, which some believe to be hidden beneath the later frescoes in the Hall of the Five Hundred, Palazzo Vecchio.
Wonderful news from #Pompeii of conservation of the painted plaster ceiling in House of the Painters at Work, Region V by University of Lausanne. So-called because the painters were interrupted by the AD79 eruption & left frescoes forever unfinished.

A dream fulfilled yesterday. Visited the house of Augustus in the Forum. It was nice but could do with a bit of work... 😜 The use of frescoes and perspective was ahead of its time. Was worth the wait in the searing heat.

The garden scene from Livia’s villa at Prima Porta, just outside of Rome, is undoubtedly one of the most stunning frescoes from the Roman world. Such serenity.

Two frescoes – the Assumption & scenes of the Martyrdom & removal of the body of St Christopher – which were suffering from damp, had been detached from the walls & taken to Venice in the late C19th. The other frescoes were completely destroyed in the bombing.
Today we dragged the children to yet another church to see more frescoes. But for me this was a personal pilgrimage. The sublime frescoes of Piero Della Francesca in Arezzo.
