Delightful fresco showing the wine god Bacchus and Mount Vesuvius. Bacchus became hugely popular at Pompeii where wine was produced on an industrial scale. He was often depicted in grape pressing rooms and domestic shrines. #LastSupperinPompeii
Great way to round off 2019 at the @AshmoleanMuseum exhibition #LastSupperinPompeii. Pics include the bronze counterweight from a set of scales, dining room mosaic of death, carbonised walnuts, & a carbonised loaf of bread. All from Pompeii or Herculaneum. #Romans #archaeology
Another personal highlight from #LastSupperinPompeii - a detail from a beautiful 2000 year-old wall-painting (!)
Remiss of me to forget another staple of the Pompeians’ diet: olives! Plenty of carbonised olives have been found in Pompeii but only one bottle of olive oil has. According to @DrPCRoberts, curator of #LastSupperinPompeii, it still smells strongly of olives today. #WorldFoodDay
Details of the dining room fresco from the palatial House of the Golden Bracelet at Pompeii. Painted to resemble a pavilion, the scene offers imaginative views of a luxuriant garden filled with birds; roundels mounted on columns are decorated with cupids. #LastSupperinPompeii
Roman fresco showing Europa riding the bull, Zeus in disguise, who looks knowingly at the viewer. Taking the form of a bull, Zeus abducted Europa, taking her to Crete where she became queen. Early 1st century AD, from the House of Jason, Pompeii #LastSupperinPompeii
The arresting gaze of Apollo.
Excavated in the House of Julius Polybius #Pompeii, this bronze statue would have originally been fitted with a tray in one hand & lamp holders in the other. An antique at the time of the eruption & probably dates to 1st cent BC #LastSupperinPompeii
Lavish silver tableware (argentum escarium) on display @AshmoleanMuseum. Look at that elegant strainer 😍 #lastsupperinpompeii
Boudicca's burning 🔥 of London in 60/61AD destroyed houses and shops. These carbonised remains of olives, lentils and pomegranates were found during excavations at 1 Poultry and are on display @AshmoleanMuseum #lastsupperinpompeii #Romans #food
There's a stunning show on at the @AshmoleanMuseum featuring food, volcanoes & Romans. Look at this incredible fish mosaic and the World's First Custard Cream #LastSupperinPompeii https://t.co/gku3u4mcWy
Am in total love with this swooping black-headed dove in the dining room fresco from the House of the Golden Bracelet, #Pompeii. The bronze statue—a truly elaborate lamp stand—is from the House of Ephebus, #Pompeii #LastSupperinPompeii
Can’t believe these Roman treasures from Pompeii in the Naples National Archaeological Museum, are going to be heading to Oxford for @AshmoleanMuseum show #LastSupperInPompeii - looking at Roman life through what they ate - and how. #napoli #naples #pompeii #oxford
