I get comics have been going more writer-centric since the exodus of McFarlane and Co. but with that change, has come comics that read more like something from Aaron Sorkin. If you're going to be inspired by TV maybe go with something that Glen A. Larson had a hand in creating.

Also don't be afraid to practice by tracing or just overlaying images, it's not cheating.

Even using pictures of your own work or outlines is super handy.

It really helps you to get used to digital drawing and blending techniques.
