The Mysterious Red Haired Swordsman returns! Varik, or Ares for those familiar to his origins in Japan, reappears for the sequel to the original Earthbound: Halloween Hack! Here's one of his overworld sprites.

Ironically, I don't recognize these sprites. Can't remember at all where you see them in-game. Gotta be somewhere, though. 3DS remake has 'em too (second image)
I've been experimenting some more, with VN-style sprites. The left is what I generated (few rounds of tweaking and back to generation). Today I made the model on the right, using FaceBuilder (expensive! But the topology is nice) and more SD img2img generation.
@WarLordOfZygons @forestillusion That's not a map in SMB3. Also those trees on the right look like Super Mario World - Forest of Illusion sprites.
I was wondering if maybe this is an early prototype level from one of those games.
I made the first one over a YEAR ago and just now noticed the z's were missing from her face... grief. so that's part of what I had to redo with her sprites.
Need to somehow grasp the rendering style of death mark sprites... the ng sprites looks much more high quality and harder to achieve
