The contrast between the somber early-paintings of and the brilliance of his late-work is obvious; however his plunging perspective, grasp of clouds and atmosphere was constant. Van Gogh could evoke the mood of a specific locale and bring viewers into the experience.

The Reaper, after Van Gogh. Day 5 study. Van Gogh painted this, inspired by Jean-François Millet's The Reaper. He often wrote praise about Millet and studied from his works. Struggled with this sketch, very out of sorts today.

The theme of labor was a central one for having been reared in a rural community inhabited by field hands, farmers and craftsmen. The humble worker was a central theme of the Gospel where the idea of the earth's cultivation as a sacred action is frequently celebrated.
