At the age of 12 I started in calligraphy, which led me to typography and design later on. Some ideograms in logogrammatric languages attempt to visualize abstract concepts, such as 上 up and 下 down.

To save money on paper and postage in the 19th century people would sometimes write a "crossed letter"
each side to be read again at 90°
very occasionally diagonals were added too
