在1830年的美国人口普查中出现过三名中国姓名，但记载残缺。

1838年有文字记录的梅阿芳是第一位到达美国的中国女性，她是以模特身份登陆的。
从事美中贸易的卡尼兄弟在广东与阿芳签约，把她运到了纽约，向观众展示清朝服饰和三寸金莲，门票25美分。
