青森～札幌間を結ぶ寝台急行には余剰車種の583系が入念な耐雪工事を施され投入された。寝台はもちろんのことサロを格下げした指定席車「ドリームカー」やサハシを改造した「のびのびカーペットカー」を連結し様々な需要に対応している。
