We actually have one site from the Late Cretaceous where a volcanic flow preserved a bunch of open areas in full detail. Here are some reconstructions of that site by Mary Parrish, and some of the fossils.

@iszi_lawrence @Dave_Hone As far as I know, there is no eye-stripe in Psittacosaurus, too much of the pigment has been cleaned off the Senckenberg fossil. We can only see that the face was heavily pigmented. Might you have been thinking of our description of Sinosauropteryx, Dave?
