I feel like an underrated aspect of FFXIV is that it absolutely nails sense of place.

The music blended together with scenery in places like the Azim Steppe and the Churning Mists makes for such incredible environments.

Doing my own speculative light experiments in 3D, then doing the same in VR and seeing the results or exploring the results in VR helped the most

I tend to focus on soft indirect light, in environments that cannot be built, so the written theory I feel would be a waste of time

that's harder to do in environments with long lines running through it without making your flawed understanding obvious. then you can just make a mockup in 3D software or with everyday objects [example from game]
