Haven’t done a plate in a while, but figured to showcase some grebes you can find around this time. Often they are showcased in their breeding plumages but I think it is important to show their winter/non-breeding plumages too! All adult birds here drawn to scale.

please help me ID this guy I saw today?
-Northwest Washington, strutting on top of a car in a parking lot
-Roughly robin sized
-Dark colored, nearly black but not glossy, lighter colored throat.
-CRISP white line along the bottom of the folded wing
-Very chatty!

Birdtober Day 15: Red

A common songbird found through out eastern North America, often can be seen at backyard bird feeders. The males bright red plumage has made it a favorite of many, birders and non-birders alike.

I keep seeing pictures of goldcrests and questions over whether they are gold or firecrests m, so here is my handy guide. If the crown and flames don’t help, the eye stripes on the firecrest are a good backup!
