Pietro Scoppetta (Italian, 1863-1920). Watercolor and gouache on paper.
Today is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, formerly “Our Lady of Victory.” Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory in the Battle of Lepanto to the intercession of Mary, who was invoked through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe.

One thing to keep in mind about 14th-17th c. Venetian History. Loads of people called Barbaro and Barbarigo. Some even intersecting in timewise i.e Agostino Barbarigo Venetian commander at Lepanto (L) with Marcantonio Barbaro, bailo at Constantinople (R). #nameparonyms #History

Portrait of Vittoria Lepanto
Even by the standards of a violent age, the atrocity shocked Europe & was depicted in art many times. It was in part the horror story of Famagusta that galvanized the Christian powers into action, leading to the Battle of Lepanto in Oct 1571.
