1912 on this day, Douglas Mawson on the Aurora with the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, reaches Commonwealth Bay in an unusually calm spell. They will find it is one of the world's most windy places. Mawson will call his account of the expedition "The Home of the Blizzard"
Mawsonia is an extinct genus of prehistoric coelacanth fish that reached 6 metres in length & lived 100 million years ago.

1911, Douglas Mawson records in his diary that the mens' spirits were lifted on this day because of lighter winds which had dropped to an average of 45 mph, a "strong gale". Arriving during an unusually calm spell, he had established his base in one of the windiest spots on earth

The artist, Rose Mawson, was disabled & spent time painting wildflowers. Her sister gave them to us in 1942 because she'd loved a wildflower exhibition at the museum & wanted to say thanks!
