On Book Day, I display with pride the covers of the two books to which I have devoted the past two decades of my life. For those who’ve not read them, together they tell the story of how Scotland’s game spread round the globe in the age before the Great War.

Surrounding the are sculptures of Scotland’s coat of arms also seen in the first piece engraved on Macbeth’s sword. The presence of the all-seeing at the top, on behalf of The Witches, raises the question of who’s really pulling the strings.

The Bho Bheul an Eòin (From the Bird’s Mouth) by artist , has given Gaelic names to 40 of Scotland’s recently arrived species.

Amongst the newly-coined names is lach-dhubh tuinne - for the Surf Scoter. Literally meaning “black duck of the wave”.
