Dino Fact:

Tarchia (Brainy One) is an ankylosaurid from Late Cretaceous Mongolia. It was named this as it had a larger brain compared to Saichania, another ankylosaur who coincidentally was found in the same area and named at the same time as Tarchia.

I went horse riding once. In the wilderness of Mongolia. I felt imperious charging across the green hills on a great stallion, but according to my wife it looked like a giant riding a malteser. Apparently it’s not normal when riding that your feet can hit the ground...

So, yeah. I love dinosaurs. Have my depiction of a Gallimimus. These guys are from the Late Cretaceous and lived in Mongolia. They are known for their large size and for being a very speedy omnivore. It is believed Gallimimus' would've had feathers.

Happy to share a private comission I finished a while back!
The client asked me to depict his mother in law who is of Khitan Altaic heritage. Art would need to emphasise her roots and ties to the steppe life of Mongolia.
It was an honour to receive such a personal briefing.

I kinda buy it, the reference in Herodotus does almost sound like a garbled account passed down from something an old trader might have seen in Mongolia. the griffin in the greek imagination was very much a composite/symbolic animal though... I love Terryl Whitlatch's version

Abrimos hilo.

China plans to replace Mongolian language with Chinese in schools of Inner Mongolia.
Parents and students have protested for weeks.

A typical pre play of Beijing‘s cultures genocide, which also happens on Tibetans and Uyghurs.

My art take on it

Here's a throwback for some of Late Cretaceous Mongolia. They're a few years old and of questionable accuracy, but I was rather proud at the time of the color patterns evoking an arid habitat

These 2,000 year old embroidered woolen textile fragments were buried under a thick layer of blue clay in a Xiongnu grave, in the thickly wooded Sudzuktè pass in Mongolia. The fragments probably came from Syria or Palestine, and were embroidered in NW India https://t.co/9phjsSldDL
