Violet introduced Munnings to Exmoor after they married. In 1920, she bought a cottage at Wootton Courtenay where they would spend time.

Munnings wrote he had “nothing to do except paint and play around”.

Riding out on the moors he captured the landscape & wild Exmoor ponies.

This we are in the Unsaddling Enclosure 🐎

The unsaddling enclosure, like the start of the race, was another of Munnings's favourite subjects.

In the studies he experiments with the bright light contrast of the stands, the coat of the horse and shadows.

Munnings ecalled the pleasures of rowing along the river:

“passing along level with the banks on peaceful, calm surfaces, forcing the canoes through eddying narrows, between thick clumps of dark green rushes in the shallows …”

It was in the aftermath of the First World War that Munnings began to secure commissions to paint thoroughbred horses.

In later life, Newmarket racecourse was where he went to recharge, relax, socialise & paint for himself in his own style, free from the demands of a patron.
