'Samson of a Man.' Harry Becker's great passion was to paint the life of rural Suffolk. In particular he captured farmworkers at their daily tasks ploughing, ditching, hoeing and leading horses in the first decades of the 20th century.

Thomas Gainsborough was born in 1727 in Sudbury, Suffolk. He was one of the leading portrait painters in England in the later 18th century. Here you can see the earliest known self portrait in oil by Gainsborough, and the only known one of him with his family.

Harry Becker,'A Man Named Samson' was a horseman in Wenhaston, Suffolk. A veteran of WW1, one day in November 1919 he walked & drilled a 25-acre winter barley field. Becker was eager to record the final days of an ancient rural, farming system and a countryside he deeply loved.
