Phiomia was an early member of the Proboscidea; distantly related to true Elephants. Remains are known from the Faiyum region of Egypt; from the Late Eocene to the Early Oligocene.
#FossilFriday Paraceratherium bugtiense is type species of genus Paraceratherium. The fossils were found in the Chitarwata Formation of Pakistan(Oligocene). Not like its gigantic cousin,Pa. bugtiense is smaller. But it was still the largest mammals in Pakistan at that time.
Two nocturnal Palaeotherium magnum (Ancient beast) begin their search for food after a quick drink. An extinct genus of ungulate known from the Middle Eocene to Early Oligocene Epochs (Lutetian to Rupelian Ages 44.5-33.6 MYA) and discovered in France, Germany, Spain
@CentralCenozoic The Eocene-Oligocene Quercy Phosphorites Formation in France for its incredible 3D preservation.
Protoceras celer (first horns) from the Oligocene to the Early Miocene 33.3—16 MYA, existing for approximately 17 MY. Discovered by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1891, from North America. Classifies as Artiodactyla, Protoceratidae, Protoceratinae. Illustration by Joschua Knuppe. 🤓🐉
@JCRev4 @king_tyranno Oh yes, there was actually a dinosaur rhino. I present you Rhinosaurus magnus. An extinct genus of abelitheriid rhino that existed from the early oligocene to Early Miocene of central Davidpeteropia. It was exclusively a carnivore, a unique trait within perissodactyla.
Squalodon, a large predatory dolphin from the Oligocene, may have had a taste for penguin flesh. This Kairuku is unfortunately on the menu.
An intelligent mammal species. Notably, had a distinct, guttural language and lived in small societies. Went extinct sometime in the Oligocene.
I have been wanting to reconstruct Entelodonts for a while, so for today’s #MammalMonday I decided to sketch this Daeodon, a huge entelodon with a 90 cm skull that lived in the Oligocene and Miocene of North America. I really enjoyed this one #paleoart #sciart
Day three of my Prehistoric #Plants #SixFanarts:
Ptilophyllum muelleri, a bennettitale known from the Oligocene of Tasmania; it is rather interesting, as it greatly extends the known range of bennettitalean fossils (which prior to its discover where only known from the Mesozoic).
Meet 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘰𝘭𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘪, a tiny, newly described #mustelid and the earliest known from North America. This discovery sheds light on mustelid #evolution and #ecology in the Oligocene. #fossilfriday
Out now in our April issue! https://t.co/uq7vJMkh69
Rostaveos also is based on Pelagornis, an extinct species of bird that lived during the Chattian age of the Oligocene(25 million years ago) and it's color scheme is inspired by the Southern Giant Petrel, a species of large seabird of the southern oceans.
The Oligocene Pacific had grey, miserable mornings too: see for yourself with my latest #paleoart post at #Patreon, where the plotopterid Copepteryx braves shoreline drizzle. See it in high-res and find loads of other palaeo content there, from $1 a month. https://t.co/dgsB1VYsyE
New online: Low, Su, Spicer, Wu, Deng, Xing & Zhou - Oligocene Limnobiophyllum (Araceae) from the central Tibetan Plateau and its evolutionary and palaeoenvironmental implications https://t.co/7XxPvDwNHC
For #FossilFriday, the oldest European ruminant! Bachitherium thraciensis from Bulgaria & Serbia (ca. 38My, Late Eocene). These fossils explain a tectonical diachronism of the faunal dispersals into Europe at the base of the Oligocene (34My vs 31My).

The #Ratha #GraphicNovel is set in the early #California #Miocene, just after the #Oligocene. WIP by Dani Long and Tod Wills. We used this page to show various strange creatures of that time. Can you name them? #comic #paleofiction #xenofiction
My submission at Concurso Internacional de Ilustraçao de Dinossauros. I wanted to depict a group of Kairuku grebneffi, swimming alongside to Megalampris keyesi. A snapshot from a submerged New Zealand of the Oligocene. #kairuku #penguin #paleoart #digitalart #oligocene #ciid
#FossilFriday The delightfully bizarre teeth of the Oligocene-Miocene hippo-like mammal, Desmostylus (Fresno Co., CA, @calacademy Geology collection)
Janjucetus hunderi is an extinct whale from the Oligocene, 25 million years ago. It lacked a baleen system & instead had sharp teeth for ripping apart prey. At 3.5 metres long, it was about the same size a bottlenose dolphin.

Baleen whales are known for their large size, but in the past some were relatively small. Here's the Oligocene baleen whale Fucaia goedertorum, its skull and mandibles are not much larger than the extant Pacific White-Sided Dolphin #FossilFriday #NHMLA #MarineMammals
