The Sugarbaker procedure (after Dr. Paul Sugarbaker) for intra-abdominal malignancies, involves complete surgical tumour removal (cytoreduction), including stripping of the peritoneum, intra-operative heated chemo, then post-op intraperitoneal chemo. Takes about 10 hours!

I like learning about ‘old’ terms for diseases, and came across quinsy (a peritonsillar abscess). The name comes from Old French ‘quinancie’, which itself came from the Greek ‘kynankhe’, meaning sore throat but literally translates to ‘dog strangle’ (as in a collar)!

The Fowler position, used in surgery, was named after Brooklyn surgeon George Ryerson Fowler, who initially described it in April 1900 to treat diffuse septic peritonitis. He also performed the first successful pulmonary decortication on a 35 year old woman in October 1893.
