日本では1904年に自家製の醸造酒を禁じた為に今や絶滅危惧文化でもあり、酒造業者でも作っている所は稀少。皮肉にも現在手軽に手に入る類似品は韓国のマッコリである。
ちなみに甘酒は酒ではない。
