After a long search for references on Pinterest and shooting some of myself, I start working on polishing the shapes in Photoshop looking for balance in the values and use of textures. I always remind myself to go from big general strokes and shapes and then the details.

great advice din ung trying diff mediums. i went from trad to digital and i remember being focused on finding a brush and style that was identical to how i draw with highlighters: textured, blocky and opaque, and that's now a big part of my process

When I'm painting, I usually break it up into stages.

1. Block in values
2. Lay in colors
3. Light the set
4. Add texture/fx
5. Final touches

That way you can focus on one task and save time.
