M is for Maingano cichlids!
This week's theme was "Fish starting with the first letter of your name". There are so many M cichlids, but the bright stripes on Maingano are definitely a standout. This is a male, identifiable by yellow egg spots on it's anal fin!

Childcare can be tough no matter your species - just ask the mouthbrooding cichlid moms!

Females of several cichlid species hold their developing young inside their mouths until they hatch, making feeding impossible - so Mom may go without eating for weeks

Fish described in 1988 is the theme.
Darters are always a favorite of mine. Here is Etheostoma pyrrhogaster - the firebelly darter, from the Obion and Deer Fork drainages of Kentucky and Tennessee.

Throwback doodle to my grad school days when I invented this superhero fish, the Caped Cod. Apparently he is fighting a capitalist Gulf Stream Eddy? I'm not sure what I intended back then...

The Japanese Dace (Tribolodon hakonensis) lives in Lake Osorezan in Japan, which has a pH between 3.8 and 3.4. I imagine swimming around in a lake with the acidity of sauerkraut has the potential to be an interesting superhero origin story

This week's may or may not be on theme... Basking sharks are at least super cool!
