No existing ancient text names her. Her name comes from Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s 1762 poem ‘Pygmalion’.

There are two Galateas in myth. The other Galatea is a sea-nymph whose lover is killed by a jealous cyclops & she saves him by turning him into a river spirit.
