My favorite part of the painting process is deciding on the initial color and lighting scheme with big brush strokes. I also love to make decisions about edges and values. :)

Yes, its basically rudimentary tone-blocking and its part of how our brain registers first contact visual information. You are essentially highlighting the silhouette, which is super important for readability in visual art.
