La paura è l’emozione più difficile da gestire. Il dolore si piange, la rabbia si urla, ma la paura si aggrappa silenziosamente al cuore.

Henry Fuseli, Incubo, 1781
Late 1700s & early 1800s Britain was in some ways an enchanted era, of great esoteric creativity.
Magic inspired awesome artworks, from the poems of Burns & Wordsworth, to the paintings of Henry Fuseli.

Happy Birthday, Henry Fuseli! The Swiss painter was born this date in 1741! This 1790-91 variation of his painting, "The Nightmare" is one of our favorites- this is every Sunday morning when we try to get an extra hour of sleep, and the cat and dog are ready to start the day!
Henry Fuseli was born 7 February 1741. He put the authentic creepiness into Homer. I've long been haunted by his sad, disabled Hephaestus, his armpits supported by AI robotic maids, and his terrifying 'Tiresias revealing the future to Odysseus' on the edges of Hades.
Great posts by @JANUSZCZAK and @MrEwanMorrison today on Swiss Romantic artist #HenryFuseli whose most successful work was 'The Nightmare' #Freud gave a print of it to Marie Bonaparte; it also inspired myriad artists including the disturbing #Balthus (right: 'The Room' 1953)

@earlymodatLancs @LancasterGothic Rackham 1908 and earlier Doré is important and Fuseli's MSND. Fuseli's MSND is wonderfully dark below he has a fairy courtesan who keeps an old man on a chain...ooh!
On this sad day, let's remember some of the foreign artists who came to England and made great art here. Peter Lely from Holland. Henry Fuseli from Switzerland. Frank Auerbach from Germany. Phillip de Loutherbourg from France. They were obviously trying to tell us something.
