Hogarth: Place and Progress - like meeting up with some old friends. A Rake’s Progress (1734), Four Times of Day (1736-7), The Humours of an Election (1754-5). Exhibition brings all his series paintings and engravings together for the first time.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from Hogarth: Place and Progress, it’s that you mustn’t go to the City of London or death awaits!

If you’re ever wandering Bloomsbury’s streets look up...

Hawksmoor’s St George’s (1731) has lions and unicorns chasing each other around the spire (a reference to England & Scotland) with George I looking down

It’s depicted in Hogarth’s ‘Gin Lane’

I bought a first edition Caldecott last year for under 20 pounds. Much cheaper 2nd edition. A signed limited edition Burne Hogarth in 'fill a bag with secondhand books for $5' store. There are lots of interesting vintage books that children can buy for very little outlay.

So sad that MAD magazine is shutting down. It was the gateway to subversive humor as a kid, copies bounced around the house between my sisters and me, was always packed to go on summer vacations. I tipped my hat to MAD by having Hogarth show it to the Giant in IRON GIANT.
