when doing short but thick fur, I typically approach it in a simplified form similar to triangular scales, and detail out from there. Using this sort of diamond shape I find personally allows me to shift them more organically along with utilizing soft or "lost" edges!

Idk if anyone have notes before but I often use runes when I draw dinos scales and dino fuss because I think runes are neat and allready look like scales and feathers sometimes.
