Once I settled on a composition, I started my sketches. It was difficult to get the perspective right since I couldn’t find a photo reference that matched exactly what I wanted. After I got it to look okayish, I painted my second draft (minus the Cromer since I ran out of time).

Reducing colors to B&W and only playing with contrast is a great way to check the aesthetic level of a composition. If it looks decent in B&W, it almost certainly looks great with color.
