One of my favorite paintings:
“The Scapegoat” 🐐
Painted between 1854 and 1856 by William Holman Hunt (1827 - 1910)🇬🇧
#OTD 1854, the Charge of Scarlett's 300 or Heavy Brigade at Balaclava. Such a dreadful event for men and horses, but a brilliantly dynamic evocation of it (after Stanley Berkeley, c.1890). Thanks @NAM_London. #history #Crimea https://t.co/uoWdPlLfr0
I'm sure everyone knows who this is... Commodore Matthew Perry. The American man credited with opening up Japan to the west and stoppped having it be closed! On his 2nd visit to Japan in 1854 he visited Hakodate - one of two ports opened to Americans in the Treaty of Kanagawa.

Oscar Wilde was #BOTD 1854. In 1891 he wrote "Salomé" a play that proved so popular it inspired numerous silent adaptations incl. Nazimova's 1922 film. Later versions featured Eartha Kitt as Salomé in 1955 & Al Pacino as Herod (2018) + Ken Russell's 1985 SALOMÉ'S LAST DANCE.
The Myth of #OscarWilde’s Martyrdom. He cast himself in a dazzling array of roles, both on and off the page. Can history restore the full measure of Wilde’s complexity?

On this day in 1854, the author and world-champion decadent Oscar Wilde entered the world. For this author portrait in the Illuminated Edition of THE FAIRYTALES OF OSCAR WILDE, @yukoart dressed him in a fictional but fitting peacock-print suit. Happy Birthday, dear Oscar.
Happy Birthday to Oscar Wilde, born on this day in 1854.

“Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one's head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no tomorrow. To forget time, to forgive life, to be at peace.”

☞ https://t.co/dpufucmWOb

This illustration of Victoria amazonica by William Sharp is among the first and finest examples of American chromolithography published in the 1854 book Victoria Regia or The Great Water Lily of America.
