This artwork by Kitagawa Utamaro depicts the scene of a shell-matching game. The inside of each shell carries an exquisite little picture of a subject such as birds, flowering plants or scenes from the Tale of Genji or the Tales of Ise.

My take on Hairdresser (Kami-yui), 1797-98, a print by Kitagawa Utamaro, from the series Twelve types of women's handicraft (Fujin Tewaza Juniko) 💕💇

Look at this! So good! He’s not at all afraid to get right in there, and the robes and faces, so characteristic of Utamaro! Both shunga here are by Utamaro and are polychrome woodblock print; ink and color on paper. Date unsure, but probably around 1790

Kitagawa Utamaro was one of the most influential masters of the Edo period, and one of the few Ukiyo-e artists to achieve fame in his lifetime. He was a major influence not only in Japan, but also to 19th c. Europe. And he made such wonderful horny art! I think about this a lot
