day 22 - Starfish ⭐

There are over 2,000 species of starfish in the ocean! Most have 5 arms, but some can have up to 20 or 40! They have eyes on the tip of each arm and their "blood" is really just filtered seawater.

Zebra Turkeyfish, Lionfish, Ornate Butterfly Cod, Poison Sorcpion - this fish has sooooo many names! Despite their fantastic appearance, they lead solitary lives and like to hide in rock crevices and bunches of coral.

day15 - Snail 🐌

There are so many different species of sea snails that it's difficult to lump them together with simple descriptions. Some are highly venomous, have lungs instead of gills, or don't even use/have shells.

Manta Rays don't have a defensive spine on it's tail like most other rays - but with a 20 foot wingspan, what do you need protection from? Despite their large size, manta rays are filter feeders and love plankton.

day11 -
In the Great Lakes they're an invasive species - invading lakes Ontario and Eerie in 1830. After a century they had spread to all 5 lakes, nearly causing the trout industry to collapse - 1 lamprey can eat 40 lbs of fish in a year!

Orcas are the largest species of dolphin. Living in pods up to 40 individuals they hunt together like wolves. By the shape of their dorsal fins, scientists can tell what they tend to eat more - fish or other sea mammals.

day7 - Eel

The Green Moray Eel isn't really green - yellow mucus covers it's scaleless body gives it the green coloring. They often open/close their mouths, which seems threatening but really they're drawing in water to breathe.

- Coconut Crab

The Coconut Crab is the largest terrestrial crab, yet closely related to the Hermit Crab. They're nocturnal scavengers - eating anything from fruit, other crab shells, and dead animals.
