Lane Smith (born in 1959) is an American illustrator and writer of children's books. He is known for his eclectic visuals and subject matter, both humorous and earnest. He won a Caldecott Award for Stinky Cheese Man (written by Jon Scieszka) in 1992, and Grandpa Green in 2012.

You are never too old to begin writing. William Steig, known for such books as Sylvester & the Magic Pebble, did not begin writing children's books until he was 61. He would go on to write 30 of them & win the Caldecott Medal. He died in 2003.
