I also want to add that Ash himself is part of that connection with the games. Like, his entire design is pretty much based off Red! And some of his later design changes are also based off the designs of the male protags too and took on the challenges that they did in-game.

Now with Ash's departure, the only connections to the games left are the regions, the terminology, and the Pokemon themselves.

It looks to me like they wanted to draw a line on how the Pokemon World should be presented in this series. Less on adapting, more on creating.

I'm just mulling and speculating here, but seeing all these original characters -- none of them derived from anyone from the games -- feels like that Pokemon Horizons wants little to no plans in adapting any of the storylines from the games themselves and be its own thing.
