Estella in Great Expectations may have been based on the mistress of Charles Dickens. After separating from his wife he pursued a much younger actress, and it is speculated that the characterization of Estella is based off of the early stages of their romance.

Primarily known for her stained-glass, Clara Burd was also an illustrator who did art for children's books and magazine covers. Along with fairy tales, she would illustrate works by Tennyson, Alcott, and Dickens.

Outside, the morning has been dreary & rainy, but inside I have been lost in the magical illustrations of Lisbeth Zwerger. She is an Austrian artist who credits Arthur Rackham as being the inspiration for her going into illustration. She has illustrated fairy tales to Dickens.
