Day 9 of The Little Auk (or Dovekie) is shaped like a friend. I would like to hold one gently cupped in my hand, it seems to be designed perfectly for it. But of course they are wild animals so I will not.

day 9 for is the Little Auk, or Dovekie!

these guys nest in big flocks on arctic cliffsides, where a couple cares for a single egg... I'm completely enamored with the idea of seeing a big sea cliff just covered in flocks of these cuties 😭

The last great auk birds were killed on June 3, 1844.

Fishermen tracked the surviving ones to Iceland’s Eldey Island, strangling the adults and crushing the eggs.

It’s a sad reminder that humans can drive entire species to extinction without any thought.

The Great Auk "is found in abundance along the rugged coasts of Labrador...and we may conclude that its range is extended throughout the whole of the arctic circle." (Gould 1837). By ~1850, this abundant species was extinct. https://t.co/VvMeSfiv7g via
