Frances Hodgkins travelled from New Zealand to Europe in 1901 and visited France in the same year. The coastal town of Concarneau, where there was a school of water colourists led by Gaugin's friend and biographer Charles Morice, is most likely where this picture was painted.

Some fairly quick colours I did on a killer Thor piece by . Declan kindly made some of his inks available to help colourists escape the isolation blues. When the inks have such a strong light source it really is a pleasure to colour.

so explored Bedford Park. Holmwood in Bedford Park was the home of Richard Bowdler Sharpe from 1879. He was ZSL in 1867 & an ornithologist. Many of his 10 daughters worked as colourists for beautiful books about & Emily Mary was an entomologist.
