Mother and Child: Sheila (Sheila), JD Fergusson, 1944.
This painting was inspired by a personal friend of Fergusson's and teacher of Margaret Morris's pupils, Sheila O'Shaunessy. The setting for the picture was Glasgow Botanical Gardens.

'Seascape, Lady with Parasol.' (1900). Some of JD Fergusson's works might be mistaken for unknown pictures by Matisse. Fergusson is an eye-catching artist, and in the fiercely coloured paintings he made before the First World War he shows exceptional character and vitality.
It's a bit chilly this morning! So how about a nice sunny painting to start the day then?

This painting is very closely linked to another of Fergusson's works, 'Gloxinias and Fuchsias' also painted in 1938. It shares the same enlarged scale and sculptural treatment of form, plus an emphasis on colour and curving line and pattern.
JD Fergusson; Lillies, circa 1938
John Duncan Fergusson painted almost exclusively female sitters. From 1915, his portraits display a purity of form, line and a fascination with the shapes of objects. 'Grace McColl,' is an example of how he used colour, pattern & costume to suggest the personality of the sitter
JD Fergusson secured a commission from the Ministry of Information for a series of paintings of Portsmouth Dockyard. He spent six weeks there gathering sketches from which he went on to paint a distinctive series of works now know as his Portsmouth Dockyard series.
