Villa A at Oplontis (Poppea’s Villa) has been on my wish list for visiting for a year. Believed to be the seaside residence of Nero’s second wife, it was only properly excavated in the 1960s. It is held to contain the very best frescoes in the Roman world (1/2)

Elisabeth Vellacott's images of people in houses, gardens and landscapes have a timeless and magical air - as if figures from early Italian frescoes had changed their clothes and wandered into her home city of Cambridge.

From 2,000 years ago ~ remarkably-conserved frescoes from the Villa of Livia, wife of the Emperor Augustus. The villa was rediscovered in 16C just outside Rome & was probably part of the dowry Livia brought to her marriage in 39 BC (Palazzo Massimo Museum)

Two of my favourite frescoes from Pompeii that survived the eruption in 79AD ~ elegant, barefoot young woman, possibly the nymph Flora, treading lightly, carrying basket & turning to gather spring flowers (from Villa Arianna) ■ and basket of figs (Poppea’s Villa)
