#MosaicMonday In the city of #Sousse in #Tunisia, there is the #Archaeological #Museum, which has a really impressive collection of #Roman #mosaic. The beautifully preserved mosaic depicting #Neptune travelling on his sea #chariot is especially impressive.

I reckon this guy made them! #MosaicMonday https://t.co/2sV3bwmXtZ
#MosaicMonday Another cross-dressing Achilles on Skyros from an oecus @vrolmeda (Palencia, Spain). The naked fair-skinned hero is draped in women, torn between two fates: palace luxury & glorious warfare. A wily tanned Odysseus looks back almost winking. "Come on then".. 1/3
"Mosaic of the Wrestling Cupids", was created about 175 AD. It was excavated in 1979 from a large Roman house just outside the #Colchester town wall. Sadly parts have been lost over time, but this drawing fills in a few of those gaps. #MosaicMonday #Museums30 #movement
Ooh, it's been a busy one so far, but here's a second #MosaicMonday offering, with the Leadenhall Street Mosaic, showing Bacchus riding side-saddle on a tigress: ca. 1st-2nd Century BC, but with 19th Century restoration. #Roman

A dramatic and bloody scene with a pair of centaurs fighting wild cats, part of the dining room floor from Hadrian's villa at Tivoli for #mosaicmonday
It is made of minute tesserae of coloured natural stones and is now in display at the Altes Museum
A #Roman villa was unearthed at East Coker #Somerset in 1753 and again in 1820
Sadly the walls were robbed for stone and the mosaics stolen but some record of their grandeur survives
A thread for #MosaicMonday
A Roman mosaic was discovered at #Wellow #Somerset in 1685 and recorded by John Aubrey
His drawing shows incredible detail for the period AND includes a scale ! 🤩😍
It is possible the central panel contained an image of #Orpheus

Another one for #MosaicMonday: The #Roman 'hunting dogs' #mosaic is lifted out of an excavation in the middle of a #Cirencester highstreet in 1849. Illustration: @CoriniumMuseum. #RomanBritain #RomanArchaeology #Archaeology
#MosaicMonday lousy photo but one of my favourites. There are small details here that really do show how one mosaicist just spent that little bit extra time on this. Aquileia 4th century CE
