I found a solution to my vertex normal problem
All I have to do is triangulate the models when exporting them to Substance Painter
For whatever reason C4D recalculates normals when triangulating causing these artifacts

Speaking of body horror, I do miss the days of vertex painting, when all you had was ~200 polygons and a vaguely fleshy palette to render a spatchcocked lab subject, and the result was genuinely terrifying

Merging some vertices but I kept seeing an extra edge in the back and a needed one in the front and had to go back because an extra vertex got merged at the beginning, but I somehow got it right the second time

Glad I'm not alone in this.

I do something similar too (although its mainly to get the divisions for box braids), and you get more control than with this method, than vertex groups.

sometimes I use grease pencil for rough sketches
