@FloppyDeepDive I thought the barbarians looked a little 'odd' compared to other C64 fighting games, but I couldn't quite put my finger on why. Not until Zzap!64 pointed out that you could connect the pins at the back to try to reset, and the figures would stay frozen on screen. Ah! Not sprites!

Gore! Work! Zzap!!! Fried!
@zappedtothe On that point, I'll be real interested in how conflicted you guys will be when you get to the June '87 Zzap. That one has Nemesis the Warlock. A stonking good game, but a complete waste of a license. It's just a slash-em-up platformer. But has nice 2000AD-level violence going on.
One of the (many) great things about ZZAP!64 was how all games were reviewed by 3 people. Most readers had a fave reviewer who shared their tastes (JR for me) so you knew you’d probably like it if they did. A brilliant reviewing system. A shame it's not used more.

Mastertronic’s first ZZAP! Sizzler is a cracker, and although it's tough at first, once you master it, it’s superb fun. It's especially good in 2 player mode: racing neck & neck with a mate then pipping them to the post is brilliant!
#C64 games I've code #8
My most recent game, a pretty tough platformer with guns. Much more technically ambitious with full screen, full colour scrolling and sprite multiplexing at 50fps. Digital only, no physical release (yet?).

Zzap 90%

Released in May 1988, Professional BMX Simulator was a game that almost every #C64 gamer owned BITD. The 2nd game in the Codemasters' Super Sprint-inspired BMX series was similar to its predecessor but added a simultaneous four-player option. It earned 76% in issue 37 of ZZAP!64.
@Il_Paradroide @C64Reloaded @TheGavNinja I could forgive Entombed's completely random puzzles because back then we didn't really question such things, and I had a Zzap walkthrough. 😁 But puzzles in the later ones are so random, and need as much luck as skill to get through, so they frustrate me. Just not my thing. 🤔
@TheGavNinja @C64Reloaded 😁
Staff of Karnath is one that I saw early on in my C64 days, so I did start off really liking the Pendragon games. And Entombed I thought was pretty cool, especially once I had the Zzap64 maps. I made it a fair way through Karnath, and did complete Entombed (with energy cheat.)
@JamesPond47 @ausretrogamer I think the Zzap crew were dead on, that most of the attraction of the arcade was its graphics and sound (and the funky handlebar controls.) The C64 version was kinda ugly. But it was different enough that I persisted with it, and kinda enjoyed its fun, with a dash of cruelty. 😋
