My Top 20 Firebird Games – No.2

The Sentinel

Breathtaking in conception & execution, The Sentinel was like nothing I’d seen before. A stunning achievement & an outstanding game that’s compulsive & utterly absorbing (sorry, couldn’t resist). Unique & unforgettable.

Samurai Warrior: The Battles of Usagi Yojimbo

So much more than a beat ‘em up, Samurai Warrior is a beautifully presented, inventive & absorbing game with ace graphics, a cool zen atmosphere & superb, varied gameplay. One of my fave C64 titles.

Io

One of the best-looking games on the C64, Io has outstanding graphics by the brilliant Bob Stevenson. But it’s more than just a pretty face. It also boasts an excellent David Whittaker soundtrack and tough but rewarding gameplay.

Galax-i-Birds

Sensible Software’s debut was a joke. Literally. A tongue-in-cheek frantic blaster based on the classic coin-op Galaxian was an ideal £1.99 game. Easy to pick up and play, good fun, and amusing. If only for a limited time.

Head Over Heels

Arguably the finest isometric arcade adventure of the 80s, Head Over Heels gained an enormous 98% ZZAP! Gold Medal in the summer of 1987. Maddeningly addictive, brilliantly original & chock-full of absorbing gameplay, it's superb.

The 2022 Advent Calendar – Day 20

Operation Wolf (Dec 1988)

An impressive achievement, C64 Op Wolf is an excellent conversion. Superb presentation (no multiload & the option to play with a mouse), great graphics & instantly addictive gameplay make it a tough but fun game.

Great C64 Moments – Loading Screens

Most UK C64 games came in the format of slow & often unreliable cassettes. However, tape-loading gave C64 artists a chance to show off their skills. 1985 was the year that quality loading screens first appeared. Here are 4 of my '85 faves.

Good question. US Gold created UK Gold to sell UK games in the US (rather than their usual model of US games sold in Britain). Dropzone was released under this label. Oddly it seems to be the only UK Gold release. So I assume the idea didn't work out.

Putting the C64 Moments list on hold to do a tribute to the outstanding human being that was Oliver Frey. A celebration of his greatest ZZAP!64 covers and the excitement, joy and wonder that they brought into the world. RIP Oli. Thanks for the pleasure you brought to millions.

Great C64 Moments – Scooby-Doo Where are You?

Scooby-Doo was described as ‘The First Ever Computer Cartoon’ and in the magazine ads, it looked amazing. Sadly it wasn’t to be; just like tie-ins for Street Hawk, Judge Death, Minder & even Sigue Sigue Sputnik (!)
