Meet Zygolophodon, bearer of perhaps the largest tusks of any animal living or extinct. This massive proboscidean was one of the biggest land mammals EVER, and otherwise differed from living elephants in having a longer body and proportionally smaller head.

Fossil Ichthyosaurs like this one were first discovered in Europe in the early 1800s. Paleontologists studied the extinct marine reptile so often that reconstructions of it were displayed at the Crystal Palace during the World Exhibition of 1851.

Now the Marquesan Swamphen P. paepae was described only in 1988 from 600 y/o bones found in French 1902 painting shows this being killed by a dog. has seen it in 1937. It must have become extinct soon afterwards
